Appointed Holy Days of the Lord

The term appointed Holy Days of the Lord is used here to distinguish those holy days commanded by God through Moses. There were, and are, Jewish holidays observed in Israel that were not ordered by God under the instructions given to Moses. The holy days under consideration here fall mainly into two groups by time of occurrence.

There were four feasts given which occurred early in the Jewish year. These were; The Passover, The Feast of Unleavened Bread, The Feast of First Fruits, and Pentecost. All of these four occurred during the first three months of the Jewish calendar.

After Passover there was a long period of four months without holy day festivities, other than the Sabbaths. Then began another rapid-fire succession of three holy days. These were; The Feast of Trumpets, The Day of Atonement, and The Feast of Tabernacles. All of these occurred within the first twenty days of the seventh month See: Appendix 7 Calendar of Jewish Holy Days.

We have already examined the significance of numbers in scriptural symbolism. Four we have noted, symbolizes worldwide, while three represents divinity and completness. The total, seven (the sum of four plus three), represents sufficiency, wholeness, perfection in the sense of completeness. This takes on special significance, when we examine these holy days ordered by God.

The Command:

The Lord said to Moses, "Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘These are my appointed feasts, the appointed feasts of the Lord, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies. Leviticus 23:1-2 NIV (italics mine).

There are six days when you may work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest , a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; wherever you live, it is a Sabbath to the Lord. Leviticus 23:3 NIV (italics mine).

The Commands for Sacred Assemblies by Groups

As mentioned above. the ordered Feasts of the Lord were timed on the Jewish calendar so that they formed two distinct groups. The first group of four occurred in the first three calendar months. Following the Feast of Pentecost, the last of the first four, there was a period of four months during which there were no ordered feasts. I have chosen to refer to this period as the interlude. After this period there was a grouping of three feasts in one month. If you are a curious individual and if you believe, as I do, that God doesn't do seemingly odd things without a reason, you must wonder about this arrangement of the feasts. We will examine them in order and by grouping.

******* first grouping *******

‘These are the Lord’s appointed feasts, the sacred assemblies you are to proclaim at their appointed times: The Lord’s Passover begins at twilight on thefourteenth day of the first month. On the fifteenth day of that month the Lord’s Feast of Unleavened Bread begins; for seven days you must eat bread made without yeast. On the first day hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work. For seven days present an offering made to the Lord by fire. And on the seventh day hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work.’"

The Lord said to Moses, "Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When you enter the land I am going to give you and you reap its harvest, bring to the priest a sheaf of the first grain you harvest. He is to wave the sheaf before the Lord so it will be accepted on your behalf; the priest is to wave it on the day after the Sabbath. On the day you wave the sheaf, you must sacrifice a burnt offering to the Lord a lamb a year old without defect, together with its grain offering of two tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil -- an offering made to the Lord by fire, a pleasing aroma -- and its drink offering of a quarter of a hin of wine. You must not eat any bread, or roasted or new grain, until the very day you bring this offering to your God. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generation to come, wherever you live.

"‘From the day after the Sabbath, the day you brought the sheaf of the wave offering, count off seven full weeks. Count off fifty days up to the day after the seventh Sabbath, and then present an offering of new grain to the Lord. From wherever you live, bring two loaves made of two tenths of and ephah of fine flour, baked with yeast, as a wave offering of firstfruits to the Lord. Present with this bread seven male lambs, each a year old and without defect, one young bull and two rams. They will be a burnt offering to the Lord, together with their grain offerings and drink offerings -- an offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the Lord. Then sacrifice one male goat for a sin offering and two lambs, each a year old, for a fellowship offering. The priest is to wave the two lambs before the Lord as a wave offering, together with the bread of the firstfruits. They are a sacred offering to the Lord for the priest. On that same day you are to proclaim a sacred assembly and do no regular work. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, wherever you live. Leviticus 23:1-21 NIV (italics mine).

********end of the first grouping********

Here in the midst of instructions given for the celebration of the ordered feasts and assemblies we find the following verse:

When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and the alien. I am the Lord your God.’" Leviticus 23:22 (italics mine).

This oddly placed verse separates the two groups of verses giving the instructions for observance of the holy days ordered by God.

******** second grouping ********

The Lord said to Moses, "Say to the Israelites: ’On the first day of the seventh month you are to have a day of rest, a sacred assembly commemorated with trumpet blasts. Do no regular work, but present an offering made to the Lord by fire.’"

The Lord said to Moses, "The tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. Hold a sacred assembly and deny yourselves, and present an offering made to the Lord by fire. Do no work on that day, because it is the Day of Atonement, when atonement is made for you before the Lord your God. Anyone who does not deny himself on that day must be cut off from his people. I will destroy from among his people anyone who does any work on that day. You shall do no work at all. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, wherever you live. It is a Sabbath of rest for you, and you must deny yourselves. From the evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening you are to observe your Sabbath."

The Lord said to Moses, "Say to the Israelites: ‘On the fifteenth day of the seventh month the Lord’s Feast of Tabernacles begins, and it lasts for seven days. The first day is a sacred assembly; do no regular work. For seven days present offerings made to the Lord by fire, and on the eighth day hold a sacred assembly and present an offering made to the Lord by fire. It is the closing assembly; do no regular work.

"‘These are the Lord’s appointed feasts, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies for bringing offerings made to the Lord by fire -- the burnt offerings and grain offerings, sacrifices and drink offerings required for each day. These offerings are in addition to those for the lord’s Sabbaths and in addition to your gifts and whatever you have vowed and all the freewill offerings you give to the Lord.

"‘So beginning with the fifteenth day of the seventh month, after you have gathered the crops of the land, celebrate the festival to the Lord for seven days; the first day is a day of rest, and the eighth day also is a day of rest. On the first day you are to take choice fruit from the trees, and palm fonds leafy branches and poplars, and rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days. Celebrate this as a festival to the Lord for seven days each year. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come; celebrate it in the seventh month. Live in booths for seven days: All native-born Israelites are to live in booths so your descendants will know that I had the Israelites live in booths when I brought them out of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.’"

So Moses announced to the Israelites the appointed feasts of the Lord. Leviticus 23:1-44 NIV (italics mine).

********end of the second grouping********

On the surface the grouping of these Holy Days seems very odd. Why wouldn’t God have spread them out over the entire year? The answer to this will become obvious as we explore the real reason behind these feasts.

First, however, it would be beneficial to identify the various feasts by the different names used for them to avoid confusion.

** These are sometimes referred to as the Pilgrim Festivals 1. Those which God required all Jewish men to attend each year in Jerusalem no matter where they lived. According to Harold Kushner, the word pilgrim applied here is, a corruption of the word peregrinwhich means traveler. This would make sense considering that all Jewish men were required to travel to Jerusalem for these feasts.

The Significance of the Feasts

We have already noted the unusual grouping of the assemblies and the various names given to them. We will now examine the historical significance of each feast and the prophetic significance of each feast for us today. Some readers may already be aware of the prophetic significance of the feasts. For others this may be entirely new information. If it is new to you, just keep in mind that all through history God has used people and events prophetically.

The First Group of Four

The Lord’s Passover

(Pesach/ Festival of Freedom)

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, "These are the regulations for the Passover: No foreigner is to eat of it. Any slave you have bought may eat of it after you have circumcised him, but a temporary resident and a hired worker may not eat of it. It must be eaten inside one house; take none of the meat outside the house. Do not break any of the bones. The whole community of Israel must celebrate it. An alien living among you who wants to celebrate the Lord’s Passover must have all the males in his household circumcised; then he may take part like one born in the land. No uncircumcised male may eat of it. The same law applies to the native- born and to the alien living among you." Exodus 12:43-49 NIV (italics mine).

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt, "This month is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year. Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb for his family, one for each household. If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with their nearest neighbor, having taken account the number of people there are. You are to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will eat.

The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats. Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the people of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight. Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs. That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast.

Do not eat the meat raw or cooked in water, but roast it over fire -- head, legs and inner parts. Do not leave any of it till morning; if some is left till morning you must burn it. This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the Lord’s Passover. Exodus 12:1-11 NIV (italics mine).

‘These are the Lord’s appointed feasts, the sacred assemblies you are to proclaim at their appointed times: The Lord’s Passover begins at twilight on thefourteenth day of the first month. Leviticus 23:4-5 NIV (italics mine).

When Israelites were away on a journey at the time of Passover or were ceremonially unclean because of being in the presence of a dead body, they could still partake of the Passover by celebrating it a month later.

They are to celebrate it on the fourteenth day of the second month at twilight. They are to eat the lamb, together with unleavened bread and bitter herbs . They must not leave any of it till morning or break any of its bones. ’ Numbers 9:11-12 NIV (italics mine).

There is deep and profound significance in these feasts not revealed by the casual observation.

The Significance of Passover

The first of the feasts ordered by the Lord was Passover. To the Israelites, this was a celebration commemorating God delivering them from slavery in Egypt. When the Lord delivered the Hebrews out of Egypt He did so by bringing plagues upon the Egyptians until Pharaoh finally consented to release them (Ex. 7:1-12:50)

The tenth and last of the plagues was the death of the first-born of Egypt, both men and beasts. The Hebrews were instructed to place the blood of a lamb over the door posts so that death would pass over their homes and their first-born would not die. Most Christians who read scripture, even casually, are aware of that story. And this feast, did indeed, commemorate that event.

There is significance beyond this, however, that many believers already know and every believer should understand. Please take note of the emphasis placed upon circumcision. No male alien or native born who was uncircumcised could partake of the Passover meal. In scripture, physical circumcision, the cutting off of the male foreskin, symbolized spiritual circumcision, marking the individual as part of the family of God.

"For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner -- those who are not your offspring." Genesis 17:12 NIV (italics mine).

This circumcision was to be done when the child reached eight days old. Eight is the number signifying a new beginning.

"Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised in the flesh, will be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant." Genesis 17:14 NIV (italics mine).

.

"A man is not a Jew if he is only one outwardly, nor is circumcision only outward and physical. No a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code." Romans 2:28-29 NIV (italics mine).

Those physically circumcised, under the law, were considered to be part of the community of Israel "the house of Jacob", regardless of their place of birth. Those not circumcised did not belong to the Israelite community even if they were native born. In fact, those males native born who were not circumcised were considered to have broken God’s law " -- will be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant" (Gen 7:14 NIV above).

Likewise those who are spiritually circumcised, "and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit," (Rom 2:29 NIV) belong to the family of God. Those not spiritually circumcised will be cut off. They do not belong and, therefore, will not be able to enter the kingdom of God.

There is more about the significance of the Passover feast that we will cover. First, let us note that it was, in the words of God Himself, a holy celebration. According to Webster’s New World Dictionary celebrate has the following meaning:

to frequent, go in great numbers, honor <celeber, frequented, populous]

1. to perform (a ritual, ceremony, etc.) publicly and formally; solemnize

2. to commemorate (an anniversary, holiday, etc.) with ceremony or festivity

3. to mark (a happy occasion) by engaging in some pleasurable activity

This was to be a time of coming together, in unity, a time of bonding together as they rejoiced and worshiped in community. A time to praise and honor God through this ceremony, for what He had done in delivering them from bondage. However, although they probably did not realize it, it also honored the Lord, for what He would do in delivering them, and all who will trust in Jesus, from the bondage of sin under the law.

The Jews and the nation of Israel were, and are, a physical portrait of spiritual truths. As illustrated previously, the delivery of the Hebrews out of Egypt was symbolic of the Lord’s plan to deliver everyone, who is willing, out of the bondage of sin and the law.

What I am saying is that as long as the heir is a child, he is no different than a slave, although he owns the whole estate. He is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. So also, when we were children, we were in slavery under the basic principles of the world. But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. Galations 4:1-5 NIV (italics mine).

It is for freedom that Christ set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Galations 5:1 NIV (italics mine).

You who are trying to be justified by law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. Galations 5:4 NIV (italics mine).

The power of sin and the law go hand in hand, because sin has no power without the law.

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory though our Lord Jesus Christ. 1Corinthians 15:56-57 NIV (italics mine).

If there is no law, there is no consciousness of a violation, even though God’s will may have been crossed. The law makes us aware of God’s will, so that we realize we cannot live up to it under our own power. To live up to the letter and spirit of the law would require divine love of God and each other. We are not capable of such love.

We had to have a Savior who would, not just cover our sin but rather obliterate it, blot it out completely and forever. Passover speaks to us of the grace and love of God, who makes death (eternal death) pass over all those who will accept the application (spiritually) of the blood of Jesus to wash away their sins.

The preparation for Passover in the Jewish community was (and is) amazing. Their houses were cleaned thoroughly, often even whitewashing or repainting the walls, scrubbing floors, cupboards, furniture and fixtures. New clothing was often purchased and special dishes and utensils were brought out for the occasion.

Rabbi Harold Kushner explains that the dishes used for the Seder meal and the week of Passover were never used for grain products during the year. According to Ben Edidin, it was not sufficient to simply wash the silverware and pots. They had to go through a process called Kashering  accomplished by washing and polishing them then dipping them into boiling water for a few minutes.

All yeast had to be removed from their homes. This was not a simple matter of removing a lump or two of yeast generally retained for baking. It also involved the removal of all food containing yeast including bread, baked goods and even the tiniest crumbs that may have fallen behind shelves, onto the floor, etc.

It became customary, after the cleaning was accomplished, to have father and the children carry out a ceremony called bedikat hametz (clearing out the leaven) . They would say a special prayer and taking a feather duster, a candle and wooden spoon, they would search diligently for any leaven missed during the cleaning process. Often some crumbs of bread would be left deliberately in a conspicuous location so they could be found during this search. The next morning at a ceremony called biur hametz the feather duster and spoon with their contents were burned in a fire outside.

Doesn’t this seem to be a message for fathers, as priests of their homes, to not only diligently seek out and eliminate sin in their homes, but to teach their children to do so?

Throughout scripture leaven (yeast) is used to represent sin. Paul makes this abundantly clear in his letter to the Corinthians;

Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with bread without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth. 1 Co. 5:8 NIV (italics mine).

Although they clearly did not understand the full meaning of the celebration many Jews were very serious about their observance of Passover. Ben M. Edidin writes of the Jewish Passover observers;

"So anxious were the people that Pesach (Passover) be observed strictly, that all hametz (leaven) belongings were sold to a non-Jew for the duration of the week, and a bill of sale was written out. This was usually done by the rabbi of the community who would "sell" all the HAMETZ property of his followers with the understanding that the bill of sale was to be returned immediately after the holiday."

In the Lord's command for the exodus from Egypt the lamb was to be slain and the blood applied to the doorposts so death would pass over them. The Hebrews (Jews) were to celebrate this event with a paschal lamb. They were to choose a lamb on the tenth of the month (ten is symbolic of law and testing) and care for it until the fourteenth of the month (fourteen is symbolic of the passing of trial or testing). These four days of special care gave the family, especially the children, a chance to establish an attachment to the lamb.

The lamb was to be slaughtered without breaking any of its bones (Nu. 9:12). It was then to be roasted over a flame. It could not be eaten raw, boiled, or cooked in any other manner. Today, since the Jews have no Tabernacle or Temple in which to make their sacrifice, some use a lamb shank.

Part of the Seder meal consists of three loaves of matzo (unleavened bread), bitter herbs or horseradish and four cups of wine. A place is set and a cup of wine is poured for Elijah the prophet. The three-matzo loaves are stacked one on top of the other. The middle loaf is removed by the father and broken in half. One of the broken pieces, the afikomen, is wrapped in a napkin and hidden between two pillows.

Later one of the children will succeed in finding it and stealing it away. A search will be conducted and the children questioned. Each child denies taking it and blames the others. Finally the one who took it will return it for a reward.

Custom also calls for the spilling of some of the wine and opening the door for Elijah to enter . The youngest child will ask four questions; "Why is this night different from all other nights? Why do we eat matzo? Why do we eat the bitter herbs and dip our food in salt water?" Why do we recline on pillows?"

To most Jews the paschal lamb and matzo are symbols of their freedom from slavery in Egypt. The horseradish or bitter herbs and salt water represent the bitterness of slavery and the tears shed by the Hebrew slaves. The cup set for Elijah and the opening of the door is because legend says that Elijah visits every Jewish home on Seder night and that he will announce the coming of Messiah.

Four cups of wine are consumed during the Seder but no one is certain why. The breaking, hiding, stealing and recovery of the afikomen is considered to be a simple entertainment for the children. The Four Questions is a means of teaching the children and reminding the adults of the meaning of the Passover.

There is much that is missed in these explanations. To Christians the paschal lamb represents Jesus, God’s perfect lamb, sacrificed for our sin. The lamb was cared for four days, there were four cups of wine drunk during Seder and the "Four Questions" were asked. Four is the number signifying world wide or universal. Four is the number of Gospels that carry the message of Jesus gift, of freedom from the bondage of sin, and His promise of eternal life to the whole world.

Jesus death and resurrection brought redemption and the promise of eternal life to everyone who will accept His gift by faith, regardless of nationality. The bones of the paschal lamb must not be broken because the bones of Jesus, God's Lamb, were not to be broken (John 19:30). The spilled wine represents Jesus spilled blood. The open door and the cup of wine are for Elijah but he has come and gone.

Jesus replied, "To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things. But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him eveything they wished, in the same way the Son of Man11 is going tto suffer at their hands." Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist. Matthew 17:11-13 NIV (italics mine).

The three loaves of unleavened, since unleavened bread represents sinless being, would represent the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The taking and breaking of the middle loaf, wrapping half of it in a napkin and placing it between two pillows would logically represent Jesus suffering death, separating body and spirit, and the wrapping of His body in burial cloths and placing it in the tomb.

This broken middle piece of bread that is wrapped and hidden is called the afikomen which according to Wikipedia means; "that which comes after" or "desert" and nothing is to be eaten after it. Isn't this descriptive of Jesus who will come for His own after the trials of this life are completed? Won't he be like a much anticipated desert to will be savored for eternity?

Later a child finds and steals the afikomen away and the search is begun, all are questioned, and accusations abound. Doesn’t this sound remarkably like what happened when Jesus tomb was found empty? The child who actually took the afikomen finally confesses to having it and is rewarded. Jesus entered our world briefly then died upon the cross so we might live. Aren’t we who have found Christ and have Him in our lives to confess this truth to all who will accept it and aren’t we rewarded handsomely?

The Lord’s Feast of Unleavened Bread

(now combined with Passover)

On the fifteenth day of that month the Lord’s Feast of Unleavened Bread begins; for seven days you must eat bread made without yeast. On the first day hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work. For seven days present an offering made to the Lord by fire. And on the seventh day hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work.’" Leviticus 23:6-8 NIV (italics mine).

The Significance of The Feast of Unleavened Bread

For the Israelites, this period symbolized the hasty departure from Egypt. They sometimes referred to this bread made without yeast as the "bread of haste".

The absence of yeast (leaven)  indicated the absence of sin. It is uncertain whether many of them ever really understood the connection to sin, despite their traditions and customs that symbolized it. As was explained in regards to the Passover celebration, the ritual traditions regarding the preparation were largely symbolic of rooting out and getting rid of sin. The preparations for Pesach (Passover) were also the preparations for this celebration which immediately followed.

This celebration also placed emphasis upon the separateness God required for the Israelites from the other nations. They were not to marry the women of other nations, embrace their customs, adopt their religions or worship their gods.

The manners, dress, customs, religious ceremonies, and stubborn belief in their special selection by God, have alienated the Jew’s as individuals, a people and a nation, from much of the rest of the world for centuries.

Most people neither understand nor accept the idea that they were specially chosen by God. For many people, including many who claim to be christian, the Jewish claim of special election by God is, at best, arrogance and, at worst, blasphemy.

Just as Joseph’s brothers sought to rid themselves of his annoying presence and therefore sold him into slavery, many have enslaved, and even tried to rid the world of, the Jewish people.

The Lord, in His command, clearly distinguished this as a holy celebration in its own right. The two feasts were, nevertheless, very closely related. Today, The Lord’s Feast of Unleavened Bread is generally celebrated as a part of Passover. Thus the unleavened bread, Jesus, has become our salvation (Passover). Harold Kushner says that the Passover;

"-- holiday, with its special prayers and foods , continues for eight days (seven days in Israel and in the Reform tradition.)"

God commanded two items for this feast; bread made without yeast and a daily offering made by fire. The sacrifices made by fire were always to be without blemish or defect. They were to hold a sacred assembly on the first day of the celebration and again on the seventh day. The bread was made without yeast, because the presence of yeast is symbolic of the presence of sin.

This bread symbolized the Bread of Life, Jesus, who we know was sinless. Yet he died on the cross for our sins. It also symbolizes the purity and holiness of true believers. The offerings by fire are not specified because these were to be fellowship offerings. The one making the offering could choose what to give, so long as it was something deemed appropriate (Leviticus 3:1-16; 22:17-31).

This feast followed immediately after the Lord’s Passover celebration, beginning the very next day, so that they essentially were almost as one. When Passover ended this feast began. This feast has its roots in the Passover. That is, Passover is the impetus for this feast.

Passover commemorates God’s deliverance of Israel from bondage. This feast recalls and memorializes the time of fellowship, refreshing and basking in God’s goodness following deliverance. It was to be a time of peace, joy and thanksgiving.

Symbolically this represented the time of intimate fellowship, joy and thanksgiving of the Hebrews as they left Egypt after centuries of bondage as slaves. To us it symbolizes the incredible feelings of joy, freedom and love new believers experience after their deliverance from the bondage that sin and Satan have placed upon those of the world. It is important to God that we be reminded of and continue in our "first love".

"Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love. Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. " Rev 2:4,5 NIV (italics mine).

The Lord’s Feast of First Fruits

(sheaf of the first grain/ Hag Hakatzir/ Festival of the Grain Harvest)

Leviticus 23:9-14 NIV (italics mine).

The Significance of the Feast of First Fruits

The Israelites were to bring a sheaf of the first grain from their fields to the priest to have him wave it before the Lord. The waving was essential, as we see, to make the sheaf acceptable on behalf of the one bringing it. To most of the ancient Jews it was probably just a feast giving thanks to God for their crops. Its a lot like that for many Christians today. Many see only what is clearly obvious and never look deeper.

In reality it brought a message of death and resurrection. Before the seed that was planted could produce fruit it had to die and be transformed. It could then come out of the ground as new life. This was a promise from God of resurrection for His anointed -- His firstfruit. This feast brought the message of Jesus resurrection and the hope it brings, though it is doubtful any of those who celebrated it had any clear understanding of this message

They were to offer a burnt offering of a one-year old lamb without blemish. This clearly was symbolic of Jesus. Though some of the feasts and ceremonies called for more than one lamb to be sacrificed this one stipulates just one. Jesus was resurrected first as the first fruits of the many He would resurrect. The sheaf represented Jesus Christ.

For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in his own turn: Christ the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all h(italics mine).is enemies under his feet. 1 Corinthians 15:22-25 NIV (italics mine).

The ancient Jews celebrated a successful harvest of their grain. The priest would take the sheaf of grain, lift it above his head, and wave it before the Lord as if to signal an offering of the fruits of victory. And indeed that is what it represented. The waving of the sheaf referred to the resurrection of Jesus from the grave and the time when He will return and resurrect those who belong to Him.

His resurrection was the first fruit of the great harvest to come when the Lord will harvest the earth separating the wheat (His elect) from the chaff (those who have rejected Him). What greater victory could there be than the victory of Jesus Christ over death, hell and the grave. This was a victory for Jesus Christ and for all who choose to follow Him.

The Lord’s Feast of Pentecost

(Feast of Weeks, Shavout or Shavuoth)

"‘From the day after the Sabbath, the day you brought the sheaf of the wave offering, count off seven full weeks. Count off fifty days up to the day after the seventh Sabbath, and then present an offering of new grain to the Lord. From wherever you live, bring two loaves made of two tenths of and ephah of fine flour, baked with yeast, as a wave offering of firstfruits to the Lord. Present with this bread seven male lambs, each a year old and without defect, one young bull andtwo rams. Leviticus 23:15-21 NIV (italics mine).

The Significance of the Feast of Pentecost

This was the last of the first grouping of feasts. It was, nevertheless, a very significant and important feast. For the Israelites this was a celebration of the completion of their grain harvest since it came seven weeks after the harvest of the first of their grain.

It was to be celebrated the day after seven full weeks had passed following the Feast of Firstfruits. Seven is the number of completion. This was the fiftieth day following seven weeks (seven - sevens) indicating the completion of something very significant -- a long awaited event.

This feast later took on another meaning to the Jews. In his book, "To Life", Rabbi Harold Kushner writes:

After the biblical period, the sages noticed that the revelation at Sinai took place seven weeks after the Exodus, so the themes of Revelation and harvest were combined into a single holiday, with the same blend of agricultural gratitude and moral-historical awareness we have noted in the other pilgrimage occasions. Shavuot became the anniversary of the Revelation of the Torah. In many synagogues, it is marked today by Confirmation services, in which adolescents, after three years of study following Bar Mitsvah, pledge themselves to live by the Torah, thus not only reading about but reenacting the Covenant at Sinai. There is also a growing custom of recognizing the presence of converts to Judaism, individual men and women who have experienced in their own lives what the rest of us can only read about, the experience of personally accepting the Torah even as the Jews at Sinai did. Appropriately, one of the featured scriptural readings on Shavuot is the Book of Ruth, whose heroine is a convert to Judaism, a Moabite woman drawn to join the people of Israel because of the kindness they show her.

It is intriguing that modern day Jews, who do not believe Jesus was the promised Messiah, spend the evening of Shavuot (Pentecost);

"staying up all night, or at least until midnight, reading the through the entire Torah --."

This bears striking similarity to the account in the book of Acts chapter two of the followers of Jesus as they waited in the upper room on the day of Pentecost.

Considering that the Holy Spirit was given to the followers of Jesus on the day of Pentecost (Shavuot) it is very interesting that new converts to Judaism are often recognized during Shavuot services. Moreover, it was only after Cornelius (a Gentile) and his family received the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues that Peter and other believing Jews accepted them as new converts.

While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.

Then Peter said, "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have." So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days. Acts 10:44-48 NIV (italics mine).

Yet another fact of interest concerning the Jewish observance of Shavuot is that according to Rabbi Kushner:

"In the Talmud, Rosh Hashannah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Pesach, and even Purim each have their own tractate, spelling out the laws of observing the holiday. Shavuot has none."

Did God not promise that in the last days He would write His law in the hearts of men? Isn’t the indwelling of the Holy Spirit the fulfillment of that promise? And if the law of God is written in the hearts of the believer there would then be no need for it to be written down on a tablet.

So again it appears that the practices and traditions of the Jews, though they do not comprehend Jesus nor the current ministry of the Holy Spirit, unwittingly reflect symbolically the spiritual truth and message of God. God continues, even today, to use the Jews and the nation of Israel to send His message to the world.

The Jews were to bring two loaves. Two  is the number of witness and division. These loaves were to be baked with yeast. Since yeast, in scripture, is always symbolic of sin these loaves could not have been symbolic of Jesus who was without sin. The loaves were to be waved before the Lord symbolizing resurrection.

These loaves were, therefor, symbolic of Jesus friends, His followers, His witnesses, who are to live in, and witness to, the world but be separate (division) from it. (see: Appendix 2). As we noted earlier we are promised we will be resurrected when He returns. The Holy Spirit, given to the believers on the day of Pentecost, is witness to that fact.

Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, and eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose andhas given us the Spirit as a deposit guaranteeing what is to come. 2 Corinthians 5:1-5 NIV (italics mine).

We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we are saved. Romans 8:22-24 NIV (italics mine).

The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs -- heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. Romans 8:16-17 NIV (italics mine).

It his was to be an offering of new grain. We, who believe the Gospel and live in faith and love, are God’s harvest. We are that "new grain" , the loaves "baked with yeast". For we, no matter how we might try, are never completely free of our sinful nature in this lifetime. But thanks be to God we are made to be, "a sacred offering to the Lord for the priest" Leviticus 23:20 NIV (italics mine).

Our High Priest, Jesus, has desired us and has made His claim upon us - not because we are worthy but because He is merciful and gracious to all who will believe His promise.

When the bread was offered seven male lambs were to be offered with it. This symbolized the completeness of the sacrifice to be made by God. When Jesus, God’s Lamb, was sacrificed, the debt was paid in full.

After Jesus died upon the cross, there was no more need for sacrifices of animals. The bull that was to be sacrificed represented the strength, and servant’s attitude, of Jesus as He ministered to the people. Rams in scripture speak of royalty and a substitute sacrifice. There were two rams to be presented. The number two speaks of witness and division or separation.

This feast was God’s message that the Christ, Jesus, would establish God’s new covenant, in which the Holy Spirit would bear witness with the spirit of His people and separate us from the influence of the world by sanctifying us through His Word. This would be the covenant promised long ago, in which God said He would write the law in the hearts and minds of His people.

Next, we see that one male goat was to be sacrificed for a sin offering. We have already dealt with the significance of the scapegoat. This again signifies the substitutiary death of Jesus as He took our punishment for sin. The priest was then to wave two lambs together with the bread of the firstfruits. This was witness that as Jesus, God’s Lamb, was resurrected so those who believe and follow Him will also be resurrected.

The Holy Spirit, given generations later on the day of Pentecost, as Jesus promised, is now evidence and seal of the Lord’s promise to resurrect us when He returns.

"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever -- the Spirit of Truth." John 14:16-17 NIV (italics mine).

.

"But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you." John 14:26 NIV (italics mine).

.

When the day of Pentecost came they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 2:1-4 NIV (italics mine).

.

"Right then three men who had been sent to me from Cesarea stopped at the house where I was staying. The Spirit told me to have no hesitation about going with them. These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man’s house. He told us how he had seen an angel appear in his house and say, ‘Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He will bring you a message through which you and all your household will be saved.’ As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. Then I remembered what the Lord had said:‘John baptized you with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ Acts 11:11-16 NIV (italics mine).

So we see that the Holy Spirit, by reminding us of the teachings of Jesus, sanctifies us day by day, as we walk with the Lord. At the same time -- this same Spirit is witness to our spirit that we are God’s children, heirs of salvation and joint heirs with Jesus. But the work of the Spirit doesn’t end there. He also gives us direction, power and the wisdom to minister and bear witness to the gospel message.

When discord arose in the early church between the Grecian and Hebraic Jews over distribution of food to the widows, we see that the Twelve Apostles gathered the disciples and told them:

"It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word." Acts 6:2-4 NIV (italics mine).

The Holy Spirit gave the Apostles wisdom to resolve the matter and restore harmony. In another instance recorded in the second chapter of the book of Acts, those who witnessed the disciples speaking in foreign tongues were amazed. Then, before they could recover from the shock of what they observed, Peter, who had previously denied knowing Jesus (John 18:15-27), boldly began preaching and about three thousand were converted Acts 2:1-16

We see then that this feast held the promise of Jesus and of our coming resurrection. But more than that, it also held the promise of God’s gift to us of the Holy Spirit as a seal to that promise, as a comforter in our trials and as our source of wisdom, inspiration and power for witnessing.

The Interlude

Here, in the midst of the commands for the Lord’s feasts, between the instructions for the first and second groups of feasts, is an instruction regarding the harvesting of their crops.

"‘When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and the alien. I am the Lord your God.’" Leviticus 23:22 NIV (italics mine).

This seems an odd place for such a command. God could have easily placed it elsewhere. Why would God put it here? One purpose it serves, is to create a break between the two groups of commands thereby emphasizing their grouping.

The second reason, is that this command is not so much a command on how to conduct the harvest, as it is a command to show mercy. In essence, God is saying, "as I have shown you mercy, so you must show mercy to the 'poor and the alien'". This is emphasized when He says, "I am the Lord your God".

This interlude, however, has an even more profound significance. We saw that in the feasts there was a replay of Jewish history. The Passover commemorated the deliverance of the Jews from bondage in Egypt and foretold the spiritual redemption of peoples of all nations.

The Feast of Unleavened Bread commemorated the period of jubilation and close fellowship with God following that deliverance from Egypt and looked to the spiritual communion with all those redeemed by God. The Feast of Firstfruits commemorated their entry into the Promised Land and the harvest of crops, by God’s grace, that they did not plant. It also spoke of Jesus, the firstfruit of many brothers, provided by the grace of God, not by the efforts of men.

Next, we saw the Feast of Pentecost which commemorated the introduction of God’s covenant with man with the giving of the Law of Moses and the end of the harvest season of the grain looking forward to the harvest of the fruit trees in the Fall. This feast as we saw also foretold the introduction of a new covenant under which God would write His law on the hearts of men after Jesus, God’s firstfruit, was resurrected with the saints of old. Believers could now look forward to the coming harvest just ahead.

That brings us to this current age of grace in which we now live and minister. This age began with the death and resurrection of Jesus and the in-filling of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost described in Acts chapter two. It was in God's plan from the beginning to bring His salvation to all peoples and all nations during this age.

"--I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles," Isaiah 42:6 NIV (italics mine).

-- he says: "It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth." Isaiah 49:6 NIV (italics mine).

But the Lord said to Ananias, "Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel. Acts 9:15 NIV (italics mine).

.

Then Jesus came to them and said. "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everyhing I have commanded you. and surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:18-20 NIV (italics mine).

God placed this command to show mercy between the groupings deliberately to represent the present age of grace.

In God's plan, no one is left out, outcast, without the opportunity to choose His offer of redemption. They can only become outcast if they refuse His offer. God is reaching out to all mankind seeking whosoever will respond to His call to come and receive His gift of restoration and peace.

This present age of grace and the church is symbolized by this interlude.

This concluded the interlude.

Authors note: Four, as we've noted, is the number symbolizing the world and the gospels. The first four feasts were symbolic of God's effort to reach and save the world. Three, as we've noted, is the number of God and the last three of the ordered feasts are symbolic of the establishing of God's eternal kingdom.

Then began the second grouping of the Lord’s holy days:

The Second Group of Three Holy Assemblies

We will now look at the last three of the seven Sacred Assemblies of the Lord mentioned before. These three assemblies came in quick succession, with one virtually on the heels of the other. They all occurred in the seventh month beginning with; first, The Lord's Feast of Trumpets, on the first day (day one) of the seventh month and the last of this group of three, The Feast of Tabernacles, beginning on the fifteenth day of the seventh month.

The Lord’s Feast of Trumpets

(Rosh Hashanah) (New Year)

To the modern day Jew this is the beginning of their new year. It is a time for reflection on the accomplishments of the past year and also the failures. A time for resolutions, plans and hopes for the coming year. But is this why God called for his people to gather for this special feast?

The Lord said to Moses, "Say to the Israelites: ’On the first day of the seventh month you are to have a day of rest, a sacred assembly commemorated withtrumpet blasts. Do no regular work, but present an offering made to the Lord by fire.’" Leviticus 23:23-25 NIV (italics mine).

The Significance of the Feast of Trumpets

The sound of the trumpet in Israel was either: a call to attention such as for a king, a call for an assembly; or, a call to battle (see: Symbols and Types). Here we see an assembly called with trumpet blasts but it was more than that. This we are told was a sacred assembly and a day of rest when no regular work was to be done.

The commemoration with trumpet blasts tells us that there was a special significance to this day. The offering made to the Lord by fire calls attention to the Lord's sacrifice for our redemption. This feast, ordered in the seventh month (seven referring to perfection in the sense of completeness), was a symbolic gathering to foreshadow the great gatherings of the Lord in the end-time.

Listen, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we will all be changed -- in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 1 Corinthians 15:51-52 NIV (italics mine).

For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 NIV (italics mine).

The Lord promised to keep His elect from the great hour of trial that is to come upon the whole earth:

Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come upon the whole world to test those who live of the earth. Revelation 3:10 NIV (italics and bold mine).

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him! Romans 5:8-9 NIV (italics mine).

God protected Noah and his family from the flood that He sent as judgment upon the earth by placing Noah in the ark which rose above the flood waters and kept them safe until all danger was past. Most pretribulationists view this as a type of the real Ark of God, Jesus, who will take the church to be with Him in the air until God's judgment, the Tribulation, is past.

For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangle and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 NIV (italics mine).

They contend that God has promised to keep His church from wrath and will keep His promise and remove the church just prior to the rise of the antichrist and the period of tribulation mentioned above.

When the believers in the Thessalonian church apparently became alarmed that the time of tribulation had already begun because of the persecution they were incurring, Paul wrote:

Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers, not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by some prophecy, report or letter supposed to have come from us, saying the day of the Lord has already come. Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshipped, so that he sets himself in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.
Don’t you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things? And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so until he is taken away. And then the lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming.

2 Thessalonians 2:1-8 (italics mine).

This will begin the period referred to in the Old Testament as the time of Jacob's Trouble and which many now commonly refer to as the Tribulation. As mentioned in Rev. 3:10 the Lord has promised to save the church from the hour of trial. Additional evidence is found in 2 Th. 2:7 where the writer clearly refers to the man of lawlessness, antichrist, not yet being revealed because of the one who is holding back lawlessness. This one is also referred to as He and clearly must refer to the Spirit of God since He is the diety now working through the children of God to restrain evil.

As we have seen in other scriptures mentioned previously, the Spirit of God dwells (is tabernacled) in the hearts of believers during this age of grace. Some believe it follows, then, that if the Holy Spirit must leave for the antichrist to be able to begin His evil work, the true church must go with Him. There has been much debate concerning the timing of Jesus removing the church from the earth, whether it is to occur pre-tribulation, mid-tribulation, pre-wrath or post-tribulation. This issue is settled conclusively, at least in the minds of most pretibulationists, by:

  • the symbol of Noah rising above the flood of judgment in the Ark,

  • the scriptures quoted above especially the promise of the Lord in Rev. 3:10,

  • the symbolism of the Tabernacle and its related feasts, and

  • the necessity of the Holy Spirit remaining within the hearts of believers until the church is removed.

Some teach that The Holy Spirit of God could not reasonably vacate the hearts of those who have been faithful. If, on the other hand, the church remained and the Holy Spirit remained in their hearts, evil would be restrained through them as it is now and the prophecies concerning the antichrist and end times could not be fulfilled.

I would, however, remind my readers that when the Lord told Moses to go to Pharaoh and lead the Hebrews out of Egypt the Lord said, "I will harden Pharoah's heart--". And he did. Pharaoh was a type of the antichrist. God does nor have to "remove" the Holy Spirit for antichrist to be released to do his dirty work. In fact scripture doesn't support this idea at all. It is clear that many, especially Jews, will come Jesus during the tribulation. How could this occur if the Holy Spirit were absent? In addition, this would be totally contrary to the very nature of God since He is omnipresent - that is present everywhere at all times.

The only issues of uncertainty are exactly when and what will the hour of trial be? Is it the entire 70th week of Israel  mentioned by Daniel, as many believe? Or is it; the last half of the 70th week, the time of trouble for Jacob, or is it the time of the outpouring of God's wrath

We know, of course, that all of scripture is God breathed, and all of prophecy has been or will be fulfilled. Antichrist will come and tribulation will follow whenever that occurs.

Consider the words of Zephaniah as he prophecies regarding the time of God's wrath upon the nations of earth:

Gather together, gather together,
O shameful nation,
2 before the appointed time arrives
and that day sweeps on like chaff,
before the fierce anger of the LORD comes upon you,
before the day of the LORD's wrath comes upon you.

Zeph 2:1-2; NIV
(italics mine).

.
"I have heard the insults of Moab
and the taunts of the Ammonites,
who insulted my people
and made threats against their land.
9 Therefore, as surely as I live,"
declares the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel,
"surely Moab will become like Sodom,
the Ammonites like Gomorrah —
a place of weeds and salt pits,
a wasteland forever.
The remnant of my people will plunder them;
the survivors of my nation will inherit their land."

Zeph 2:8-9; NIV
(italics mine).

.
Therefore wait for me," declares the LORD, "for the day I will stand up to testify. I have decided to assemble the nations, to gather the kingdoms and to pour out my wrath on them — all my fierce anger. The whole world will be consumed by the fire of my jealous anger.
9 "Then will I purify the lips of the peoples, that all of them may call on the name of the LORD and serve him shoulder to shoulder.

Zeph 3:8-9; NIV
(italics mine).

.
But I will leave within you
the meek and humble,
who trust in the name of the LORD.
13 The remnant of Israel will do no wrong;
they will speak no lies,
nor will deceit be found in their mouths.
They will eat and lie down
and no one will make them afraid."

Zeph 3:12-13; NIV
(italics mine).

Zechariah makes it clear that the Lord intends to gather the nations in a battle to discipline them for their abusive treatment of Israel. Then He will make it clear that He is the one true God and change the hearts of the survivors:

  • Then will I purify the lips of the peoples,

  • that all of them may call on the name of the LORD and

  • serve him shoulder to shoulder.

The church will be gone when the wrath of God is released! This is the implication of the Feast of Trumpets for the Church.

Pretribulationists usually place the Rapture (the removal of the church and the ressurection of believers) as occuring between chapters 3 and 4 of Revelation. Until I recently conducted an intense study of Revelation and related endtimes prophecy I agreed with this timing.

Although I still concur with the pretribulationist general interpretation of endtime prophecy I am no longer convinced that the church is removed between the events related in Revelation chapters 3 and 4. My views on this timing changed when I gained a deeper understanding of the ancient Jewish wedding ceremony, Jesus comments regarding the last trumpet, Revelation and Ole Testament prophecies.

I now feel that it is not only possible, but likely, that the church will be on earth through most of the events of Revelation being removed just prior to the outpouring of God's vials of wrath upon the earth.

The following is another meaning of the Feast of Trumpets, which does not apply to the Church, but rather to the nation of Israel. This prophetic event, concerning Israel, is closely tied to the Day of Atonement and the Feast of Tabenacles which follows very shortly after the Feast of Trumpets. We find that Jesus Himself mentioned it:

" Immediately after the distress of those days

"‘ the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’

"At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds from one end of the heavens to the other." Matthew 24:29-31 NIV (italics mine).

Jesus is speaking here of a time after the future Tribulation (distress of those days) period. This cannot, therefore, be the same call as that mentioned previously. Moreover, this speaks of a gathering of His people from all over the earth, but not of a resurrection. This is, undoubtedly, speaking of the gathering of national Israel after they are scattered during the years of Tribulation.

David ruled united Israel from Jerusalem. This was continued by his son Solomon. After Solomon's death his son, Rehoboam, threatened to tax the people even more heavily than his father had and ten of the tribes rebelled leaving only the tribes of Judah and Benjamine under him. The other ten of the tribes appointed Jeraboam as their king.

From that time the ten tribes were known as Israel and the other two were known as Judah. Eventually, because of their sinful disobedience toward God, the tribes known as Israel were taken from their homeland to Samaria by Shalmaneser.

They were never restored as a nation and have sometimes been referred to as the ten lost tribes of Israel. In fact, in a sense, they have been lost, even to themselves, being absorbed into the life and cultures of people across the European continent and to North America. Many are believed to be in England and the United States, they are lost even to themselves in that many do not know their heritage -- but God does.

There were. of course, members of all twelve tribes living in Judah and Benjamine when Shalmaneser captured and carried away Israel. Many of these retained their tribal lineage. All twelve tribes therefore maintained their identity.

Judah was also scattered later. After their exile to Babylon some never returned. During the Roman persecution in 70 A.D. Jews were dispersed all over Europe and eventually all over the world. they will be dispersed again under the tyranny of the Antichrist but God will bring them home to the land of their forefathers.

"-- The Lord will call you back as if you were a wife deserted and distressed in spirit-- a wife who married young, only to be rejected," says your God. "For a brief moment I abandoned you, but with deep compassion I will bring you back. In a surge of anger I hid my face from you for a moment, but with everlasting kindness I will have compassion on you," says the Lord your Redeemer.

"To me this is like the days of Noah, when I swore that the waters of Noah would never again cover the earth. So now I have sworn not to be angry with you, never to rebuke you again. Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed ," says the Lord, who had compassion on you. Isaiah 54:6-10 NIV (italics mine).

The Lord has promised to redeem and restore the nation of Israel - all twelve tribes. Some contend that this prophecy is even now being fulfilled as millions are returning to Israel. I would agree that this may well be partial fulfillment of this scripture. Notice, however, that the Lord says in the last line of this passage, "nor my covenant of peace be removed." This statement together with the statement of Jesus in Matthew 24:29-31 and the image of the woman (Israel) fleeing the dragon in the twelfth chapter of Revelation, lead me to believe there will be further and greater fulfillment in the future, the one mentioned by Jesus.

This is also supported, I believe by Ezekiel, where God declares He will bring them out of the nations and purge out those who revolt against Him, executing judgment;

"As I judged your fathers in the desert --"

He goes on to say,

"-- there in the land the entire house of Israel will serve me, and I will accept them. There I will require your offerings and your choice gifts, along with your holy sacrifices." Eze. 20:34-44 NIV (italics and bold mine).

"I will bring you from the nations and gather you from the countries where you have been scattered — with a mighty handand an outstretched arm and with outpoured wrath. 35 I will bring you into the desert of the nations and there, face to face, I will execute judgment upon you.
As I judged your fathers in the desert of the land of Egypt, so I will judge you, declares the Sovereign LORD. 37 I will take note of you as you pass under my rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant. 38 I will purge you of those who revolt and rebel against me. Although I will bring them out of the land where they are living, yet they will not enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
Eze. 20:34-38; NIV (italics and bold mine).

He also says,

"'As for you, O house of Israel, this is what the Sovereign LORD says: Go and serve your idols, every one of you! But afterward you will surely listen to me and no longer profane my holy name with your gifts and idols. 40 For on my holy mountain, the high mountain of Israel, declares the Sovereign LORD, there in the land the entire house of Israel will serve me, and I will accept them. There I will require your offerings and your choice gifts, along with your holy sacrifices.
41 I will accept you as fragrant incense when I bring you out from the nations and gather you from the countries where you have been scattered, and I will show myself holy among you in the sight of the nations. 42 Then you will know that I am the LORD, when I bring you into the land of Israel, the land I had sworn with uplifted hand to give to your fathers. 43 There you will remember your conduct and all the actions by which you have defiled yourselves, and you will loathe yourselves for all the evil you have done. 44 You will know that I am the LORD, when I deal with you for my name's sake and not according to your evil ways and your corrupt practices, O house of Israel, declares the Sovereign LORD.'"

Eze. 20:39-44 NIV (italics and bold mine).

In the passages above the Lord says He will bring them out of the nations with a mighty hand, an outstretched arm and with outpoured wrath. This seems to describe something similar to what happened during the Exodus. He says they will be led into the desert of the nations and there, face to face, I will execute judgment upon you. This may be speaking of a future time when Israel will be driven to seek refuge, from the troops of the antichrist, in the wilderness. Those who rebel against the Lord will be purged from Israel.

These things will cause many to realize that He is Lord. Many come to the Lord in a time of crises. This, the greatest crises in all of history being the fulfillment of numerous prophesies will open the eyes of multitudes including many  Jews. He has declared that He will be their God and they will be His people and that there will be peace for Israel at last.

No one could say that there is peace in Israel now, or that there has been since the nation was re-estblished in 1949. There has been no peace in Israel. Neither can it be said that the entire house of Israel serves the Lord. They don't. Nevertheless, these things certainly will happen. God is always true to His word!

Even beyond this, however, God is also going to repossess His creation -- all of it! He originally put the earth in Adam’s care. It was to be Adam’s birthright to rule over the earth and all living things upon it. However, he allowed Satan to rob him of his birthright through deception, just as Jacob took Esau’s birthright (Gen. 3:1-24; 25:29-34).

God’s Law, however, provides for a Year of Jubilee! This was a wonderful provision. In the year after seven periods of seven years each, that is, the fiftieth year, all property had to be returned to its original owner, or to the heirs of the original owner, and all Israelite indentured servants had to be freed (Leviticus 25:8-55).

The Lord is going to redeem planet earth, and all of His creation, under the provisions of this same law. The law regarding Jubilee also had a provision for a kinsman redeemer:

"If one of your countrymen becomes poor and sells some of his property, his nearest relative is to come and redeem what his countryman has sold. --" Leviticus 25:25 NIV (italics mine).

Now, through God’s grace, Jesus, the Son of Man, has become our relative and our Kindsman Redeemer.

Pointing to his disciples, he said,"Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother." Matthew 12:49-50 NIV (italics mine).

Jesus is the Son of the God the Father and rightful heir to all that belongs to His Father. What has been stolen by deception will be reclaimed when Jesus returns as King.

Jesus said unto them, "I tell you the truth, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first." Matthew 19:28-30 NIV (italics mine).

The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs -- heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we share in his glory. Romans 8:16-17 NIV (italics mine).

Endure hardship as discipline: God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? Hebrews 12:7 NIV (italics mine).

If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. So it is written: " The first man Adam became a living being"; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven. As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the man from heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so shall we bear the likeness of the man from heaven. 1 Corinthians 15:44-49 NIV (italics mine).

In ancient Israel, it was customary for wills to be drafted upon scrolls. The scribe would write on the scroll, roll it up partially, and seal it with wax. He would then write further, roll it up and seal it. The process was continued until the scroll was completed, usually sealed with seven seals.

It is as our relative and our Kinsman Redeemer that Jesus, the Lamb of God, will open the document sealed with seven seals (Revelation 5:1-10). John wept when he thought no qualified kinsman redeemer had been found because he understood that the earth could not be redeemed unless someone could be found who met all the necessary criteria. When the seventh seal is opened, the seven trumpets of God’s judgment begin to sound Revelation chapter 8

Then in Revelation 10:7 we read:

But in those days when the seventh angel is about to sound his trumpet, the mystery of God will be accomplished, just as he announced to his servants the prophets." Revelation 10:7 NIV (italics & bold mine).

And in Revelation chapter 11:

The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said:
"The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign for ever and ever."
And the twenty-four elders, who were seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces and worshipped God, saying:

"We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, the One who is and who was, because you have taken your great power and have begun to reign .
The nations were angry; and your wrath has come
The time has come for judging the dead, and for rewarding your servants the prophets and your saints and those who reverence your name, both small and great-- and for destroying those who destroy the earth."
Then God's temple in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant. And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake and a great hailstorm.

Revelation 11:15-19 NIV (italics and bold mine).

Jesus, having all power in heaven and in the earth, is going to take back what Adam lost. Jesus will reign and rule. Sin will no longer prevail upon the earth. The promised peace and order will be restored. Judgment will begin and those who have destroyed the earth will receive their just punishment. Those who have reverenced Jesus name and served Him faithfully will be rewarded. The Lord will reign forever!

The Feast of Trumpets speaks symbolically of the day this process will begin.

The Day of Atonement

(Yom Kippur/ Day of Returning)

From the evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening you are to observe your Sabbath." Leviticus 23:26-32 NIV (italics mine).

The Significance of the Day of Atonement

This was the only holy day ordered by God that was not to be a joyous celebration. This was to be a day of soul searching and self-denial. The Day of Atonement occurred on the tenth day of the seventh month. Ten as we've seen symbolizes law, order, trial and testing. This was the day to atone for sins of the past year -- a day of cleansing.

It is observed today by a "twenty-four-hour period of total abstention from all food and water." Harold Kushner explains:

Yom Kippur begins at sunset as the ninth day of the New Year fades into the tenth with the prayer Kol Nidre (All Vows). It is not so much a prayer as a legal formula, asking that we be released from all vows and promises we made last year and were not able to live up to, so that they not be held against us in the New Year."

Yom Kippur ends twenty-four-hours after it begins with a service known as Neilah, "the closing of the gate." The image comes from ancient times when the gates to a walled city would be closed at sunset. As the day waned you had to hurry to make it back before the gate closed and shut you out. Yom Kippur is an opening, a window of opportunity" to look at ourselves without pretense and find ways in which we would like to be different to make the next Yom Kippur confrontation with Judaism’s standards a less embarrassing one."

We see here recognition of our shortcomings, our failure to live up to God's standard of righteousness and the guilt and humiliation that result. Each year the penitent tries to shed the guilt and vows to try to do better next year but never achieves the elusive goal.

Ben M. Edidin makes the following observations about Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement):

The solemn aspect of the day is emphasized in such customs as visiting the cemetery and receiving "thirty-nine lashes." Pious Jews ask a neighbor or friend to strike them thirty-nine times with a strap as self-inflicted punishment for sins committed.

The KAPAROT ceremony, performed usually on the night before Yom Kippur, is a very ancient custom, reminiscent of the animal sacrifices in Temple days. After the Temple was destroyed, prayers took the place of sacrifices. But for some reason the KAPAROT ceremony has persisted, even though many rabbis, among them the great Maimonides, were opposed to it. The ceremony consists of offering a rooster for a male and a hen for a female. As the person swings the fowl over his head, he reads several prayers which say, in effect: May this be a substitute for me; if it has been ordained that I die, may this fowl die in my place. The fowl or its value in money must be donated to charity.

Here we see, in these Jewish ceremonies, the necessity of punishment for sin, the concept of repentance (turning from and seeking forgiveness for our sins), and the concept of a substitute sacrifice as atonement for our sin. Of course, these are sadly misplaced since they have left Jesus out of the picture. The Jews were given the truth but, as a nation, they lost it along the way. They, of course, are not the only ones who have lost or ignored the truth. God will change that!

Before things get better, however, they will get much worse. During the terrible seven-year period of Israel's final week, many people will be deceived by the antichrist.

The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refuse to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.         2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 NIV (italics mine).

During the tribulation millions will die in war and natural disasters. Countless millions of others will die of plague and or starvation (Rev. 6; Dan 11:21-45; 12:1-3). The Jewish Temple will be desecrated (Dan 11:31). As numerous ancient Bible prophecies are fulfilled before their eyes millions of people, from all nations and religions, will become believers in Jesus and many Jews will come to believe in Jesus.

The Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) was to occur in the seventh month, seven indicates completeness, and on the tenth day. Ten implies: law, order, government and testing. This day was symbolic of the cleansing of the nation of Israel and the reestablishing of God’s order, after they finally recognize Jesus as their Christ -- an event that has not yet occurred --but it will.

"And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son. On that day the weeping in Jerusalem will be great, like the weeping of Hadad Rammon in the plain of Migiddo.

The land will mourn, each clan by itself, with their wives by themselves: the clan of the house of David and their wives, the clan of the house of Nathan and their wives, the clan of the house of Levi and their wives, the clan of Shemei and their wives, and all the rest of the clans and their wives. Zechariah 12:10-14 NIV (italics mine).

One might argue that this refers to the mourning by the followers of Jesus, after the crucifixion. However, it cannot be said that the whole land of Israel mourned the death of Jesus. We know, in fact, that many were relieved at His demise. Nor did each clan of those grieved by His death mourn by itself. The following verses make it even clearer that this could only be referring to an event that has not yet occurred:

"On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to cleanse them from sin and impurity.
"On that day, I will banish the names of the idols from the land, and they will be remembered no more," declares the Lord Almighty, "I will remove both the prophets and the spirit of impurity from the land, and if anyone still prophesies, his
father and mother, to whom he was born, will say to him, ‘You must die, because you have told lies in the Lord’s name.’ When he prophesies, his own parents will stab him."

Zechariah 13:1-3 NIV (italics mine).

"I will restore your judges as in days of old, your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you will be called the City of Righteousness, the Faithful City." Isaiah 1:26 NIV (italics and bold mine).

Jesus said unto them, "I tell you the truth, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Matthew 19:28 NIV (italics and bold mine).

It is clear that the things foretold here in prophecy have not yet occurred. Idols and prophets have not been completely done away with at any time in Jewish history. Judges have not been restored. And the type of cleansing from sin and impurity mentioned here, certainly has not occurred. Jerusalem is not called the City of Righteousness and it cannot be called a Faithful City, but it will be!

There will be a great repentance and revival in Israel and Jerusalem some day, such as never has been witnessed. The name of Jesus will be acclaimed there, as they acknowledge Him as the Messiah. Judges, under the authority and inspiration of the Lord, will once again administer the affairs of Israel.

For believers of today there is also significance in the message of Yom Kippur. That message is REPENT. Just as the Hebrews were called upon to observe a day of soul searching so we should take time to search ourselves frequently since we too are careless, rebellious and prone to sin. We must take care though not to treat the matter of repentance carelessly. It is not merely a matter of confessing to a priest or saying, "Sorry Lord!" and then going about our routine - until next time.

Repent means to change our mind about the matter of sin. Too often, we are inclined to feel a bit of guilt, breath a prayer, and consider the matter closed without dealing with the self deceptions and rationalizations that led us to the sin. Notice, I said self deceptions. Satan made me do it won't cut it here. Satan may well have whispered the lie but we made the choice to believe it and embrace it.

The Lord’s Feast of Tabernacles

(Succot, Succoth or Sukkoth)

This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generation to come; celebrate it in the seventh month. Live in booths for seven days: All native-born Israelites are to live in booths so your descendants will know that I had the Israelites live in booths when I brought them out of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.’" Leviticus 23:33-43 NIV (italics mine).

The Significance of the Feast of Tabernacles

This was a most important and special feast for the ancient Israelites. Harold Kushner writes;

"-- in ancient Israel this, not Yom Kippur, was the High Holy Day."

It was, by instruction from God, a very happy and festive occasion. Children and adults alike pitched in as they prepared booths; small huts made of tree branches, in which they would live during the seven-day festival. It was a fun time. A time of excitement and joy as they recalled how God had delivered them from their bondage in Egypt.

This occasion, however, also had a much more profound meaning than was generally realized. God’s instructions said this was to occur beginning on the fifteenth day of the seventh month. The number seven as noted refers to completeness. The number fifteen is symbolic of the grace of the Godhead.

The fifteenth day would have been the middle of the month since the Hebrew calendar was lunar (based upon the cycle of the moon). This seems to imply a major event or change involving the nation of Israel during the middle of a period involving the number seven. It is my belief, and that of some prominent scholars, that when the nation of Israel finds itself in the wine-press during the Great Tribulation, they will awaken to their error regarding the true identity of Jesus.

A brilliant new political leader will have emerged who will seem like a savior for the world offering hope of world peace and prosperity. He will negotiate a peace treaty involving Israel. I believe, as do a number of others, that it will be a treaty between the radical Muslims and Israel. For three and one half years the world will breath a sigh of relief as it seems to enjoy "peace at last".

Three and a half years after the signing of a peace treaty with Israel, things will go terribly wrong. This political leader, the Antichrist, will begin to show his true colors.  Three and a half years after the signing of a peace treaty with Israel the antichrist, with his army, will enter the Jewish temple, desecrate it, and set up the abomination that causes desolation Daniel 11:31 NIV (italics mine).

From this point the most severe judgments of the tribulation period begin and many Jews will turn to God in great repentance, grieving over their mistakes regarding Jesus (Matthew 23:38-39). During this period of trials, such as have never previously occurred, some will see their error. All will hear, and some will accept, the Word of God and repent as the intensity of the trials increase. These new believers will face great persecution and death, as they refuse to take the mark of the beast.

This great turning from the world to Christ is portrayed in the Day of Atonement. This great turning will begin, I believe, with the abomination that causes desolation in the middle of the seven-year period of the Tribulation. This also seems a likely time for the Rapture to occur when God takes the true church from the world just prior to the outpouring of His bowls of wrath upon the world.

Then, the Lord will come to the aid of Israel and rescue her from her enemies. The outpouring of God's wrath is, I believe, the means of His rescuing of Israel in a fashion very similar to the Exodus. Through a series of severe judgments, similar to, but much more severe than those sent upon Egypt, the Lord will rescue Israel from her enemies and reclaim title and deed to the whole earth (Revelation 11:15-19; 12:1-9; 15:1-8; 19:11-21).

Finally, when the Lord has destroyed all of His enemies He will reclaim possession of the earth. Jesus Christ will reign as King of Kings and bring the promised period of peace to Israel. That will be the one-thousand year Millennium, symbolized by the Feast of Tabernacles ( see: Revelation 20:1-6). For more details regarding the three feasts every male adult was required to attend each year see Exodus 23:15-18.

Note: Since the time when I first wrote so confidently regarding the timing of the Rapture in earlier unpublished drafts of The Tabernacle I have read numerous other books and spent many hours studying scripture, especially end-time prophecies.

This revision of The Taberbnacle reflects the changes in my view of the end time events. I am no longer certain that the church will be gone prior to the rise of the antichrist. In fact, it now seems probable that the church may be here until just before the pouring out of the bowls of God's wrath which will probably be after the antichrist enters and desecrates the temple in Jerusalem.

Both the pre-tribualtion view and the pre-wrath view have strengths and weaknesses. It is my opinion that one of the two will most likely see fulfillment - but which I am not sure. Just don't be too surprised if you watch the signing of the treaty with Israel, the two witnesses performing miracles and their bodies lying in the streets of Jerusalem. If you do you should realize that rescue is very near.
